Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has asked the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to pursue dialogue with the federal government as part of efforts to resolve his legal and political challenges.

In a statement issued on Friday through his lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, Igboho commended Kanu for cancelling the Monday sit-at-home order enforced across the south-east for five years.

The pro-Biafra group had introduced the weekly shutdown in August 2021 to protest Kanu’s rendition to Nigeria and subsequent detention. The directive led to the closure of markets, banks, schools and other businesses every Monday in parts of the region.

Igboho described Kanu’s decision to end the protest as “thoughtful” and necessary for restoring stability and economic activities in the south-east.

He, however, urged the IPOB leader to go further by embracing mediation and formal engagement with the administration of Bola Tinubu.

“Igboho urges the IPOB leader to vigorously explore dialogue and mediation with the federal government to break the deadlock in his ordeal,” the statement read.

While affirming Kanu’s right to self-determination, Igboho said he believes the current administration is open to negotiation in the interest of peace, security and shared prosperity.

He also cautioned individuals and groups allegedly profiting from the unrest in the south-east to desist, warning that continued violence would undermine economic recovery in the region.

Kanu was convicted on terrorism-related charges on November 20, 2025, and sentenced to life imprisonment. He was subsequently transferred to the Sokoto Correctional Centre after the court ruled that the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja was unsuitable for his incarceration.

His family has rejected the judgment and indicated plans to appeal the verdict.
