In the heart of Nigeria’s Edo State, the name Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion resonates as a symbol of vision, resilience, and unparalleled contribution to society. Known as the Esama of Benin Kingdom, Chief Igbinedion’s life is a testament to the power of determination, philanthropy, and entrepreneurial spirit. Born on September 8, 1934, in Okada, Edo State, his journey from humble beginnings to becoming a towering figure in Nigerian history is nothing short of legendary. Earlier today, the book Igbinedion: Chronicles of a Legend was launched in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. The book chronicles the extraordinary life of Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, a man whose legacy continues to shape the destiny of Benin and Nigeria at large.

Early Life and Rise to Prominence

Gabriel Igbinedion was born into a modest family in Okada, a town in Edo State, during a time when opportunities for education and advancement were scarce. His early life was marked by a thirst for knowledge and an unyielding drive to succeed. These qualities laid the foundation for his ascent as a traditional aristocrat and a business magnate. Igbinedion’s title, Esama of Benin Kingdom, meaning “son of the people,” reflects his lifelong commitment to serving his community, particularly the underprivileged, through medical, financial, and entrepreneurial support.

His early years were shaped by the cultural richness of the Benin Kingdom, which instilled in him a deep sense of responsibility to preserve and promote its heritage. This connection to his roots would later influence his contributions to education, culture, and societal development.

A Visionary Entrepreneur

Chief Igbinedion’s entrepreneurial journey is a cornerstone of his legacy. Over the decades, he built a formidable business empire spanning diverse sectors, including oil and gas, hospitality, agriculture, real estate, aviation, and media. His ventures include Independent Radio and Television, a private bank, an oil refinery, diamond and gold mines, and a chain of hotels across Nigeria. Perhaps his most notable business achievement was founding Okada Air, a private airline that once operated over 40 aircraft, including planes and helicopters, before its closure.

Igbinedion’s business acumen is characterized by his ability to identify opportunities where others saw challenges. His ventures not only created wealth but also generated employment and fostered economic growth in Nigeria. His international property portfolio and investments in mining across Africa further cemented his reputation as a global businessman with a distinctly Nigerian identity.

Revolutionizing Education

Perhaps the most enduring aspect of Chief Igbinedion’s legacy is his transformative impact on education in Nigeria. Recognizing education as a catalyst for progress, he established Igbinedion University in Okada, the first private university in Nigeria. Since its inception, the university has achieved remarkable milestones, including being the first private institution in the country to produce medical doctors. With an enrollment of approximately 7,000 students and under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Dr. Eghosa Osaghae, the university continues to uphold Igbinedion’s vision of academic excellence and accessibility.

Beyond the university, Igbinedion’s commitment to education is evident in the Gabriel Igbinedion Education Foundation, which provides scholarships and support to thousands of financially disadvantaged students. His efforts have empowered countless young Nigerians with the knowledge and skills to pursue their dreams, ensuring that education is not a privilege but a right.

Philanthropy and Cultural Preservation

Chief Igbinedion’s philanthropy is legendary, touching lives across Nigeria and beyond. His generosity extends to funding surgeries for the underprivileged, building hospitals, and constructing churches, including a grand Catholic cathedral in Benin City. His contributions to healthcare have provided critical support to communities, while his investments in cultural organizations and museums have preserved the rich heritage of the Benin Kingdom.

As a custodian of Benin’s cultural legacy, Igbinedion has championed initiatives that celebrate the region’s traditions and historical significance. His efforts ensure that future generations remain connected to their cultural roots, fostering a sense of pride and identity. His detribalized approach to friendship, unhindered by race, class, or religion, has made him a unifying figure in a diverse nation.

A Statesman and Community Leader

The Esama’s influence extends beyond business and philanthropy into the realm of leadership and unity. His ability to bring people together across political, religious, and regional divides has earned him widespread respect. At his 90th birthday celebration in 2024, former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole publicly acknowledged Igbinedion’s pivotal support during his political career, describing him as a “good father” whose guidance was instrumental to his success. Oshiomhole’s heartfelt apology for past misunderstandings underscored Igbinedion’s role as a unifying patriarch in Edo State.

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has also praised Igbinedion as an icon who has contributed immensely to the peace, unity, and development of Nigeria. At the maiden Esama of Benin Veterans Cup, a football tournament held in his honor, Obaseki highlighted Igbinedion’s role as a “glue” in society, fostering harmony and touching lives through his social initiatives.

Challenges and Resilience

Chief Igbinedion’s journey has not been without challenges. In 2008, he faced a temporary suspension from palace activities in the Benin Kingdom, a decision that sparked widespread speculation. However, in 2012, the Oba of Benin lifted the suspension, reaffirming Igbinedion’s status as the Esama and dispelling rumors of enmity. This episode highlighted his resilience and ability to navigate complex socio-political landscapes while maintaining his commitment to his people.

Igbinedion’s family, including his son Lucky Igbinedion, a former two-term governor of Edo State, continues to carry forward his legacy. His children, including Kenny, Chibuzor, and Charles, have also made significant contributions to public service and business, reflecting the values instilled by their father.

The chronicle of Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion is one of a legend whose impact transcends generations. From his pioneering business ventures to his transformative contributions to education, philanthropy, and cultural preservation, Igbinedion has left an indelible mark on Nigeria. His life embodies the essence of the Esama title— a “son of the people” who has dedicated his existence to uplifting others.

The new book is expected to spark up conversation in days to come. As Nigeria continues to evolve, Chief Igbinedion’s legacy serves as an inspirational beacon, reminding us that one individual’s vision and compassion can change the course of history.
