The Akwa Ibom State government has taken a significant step towards realising its long-standing maritime vision with the signing of a memorandum of understanding for the development of the Ibom Deep Seaport.
The agreement, signed at the Government House in Uyo between the state government and the Interaf Group Consortium, marks a renewed momentum for a project widely regarded as pivotal to the state’s industrialisation and economic growth.
Governor Umo Eno, who spoke through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prince Enobong Uwah, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering the seaport project.
He described the initiative as critical to Akwa Ibom’s economic future and urged the consortium to work closely with the Akwa Ibom Investment Corporation (AKIC), which represents the state’s interests in the project.
The governor assured stakeholders that his administration is ready to meet all the requirements necessary to advance the project and ensure its sustainability.
He also welcomed the involvement of experienced industry players, particularly commending former Minister of Petroleum, Don Etiebet, for his contributions toward driving the project closer to fruition.
Speaking at the event, Etiebet praised Gov. Eno’s leadership, describing it as purposeful and impactful.
He recalled that the Ibom Deep Seaport was first conceived in 2007, noting that the signing of the agreement represents a major milestone after years of planning and anticipation.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Interaf Group Consortium, Ezinwa Ibekwe, expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in the consortium by the state government.
He assured that the consortium was fully prepared to execute the project and committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure its successful delivery.
The agreement outlines the framework for cooperation on the development and eventual operation of the Ibom Deep Seaport, as well as the proposed Ibom Industrial City, detailing the preliminary roles and expectations of both parties.
The signing ceremony was attended by the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Mr. Uko Udom (SAN), the Managing Director of the Akwa Ibom Investment Corporation, Pastor Imo Jacob, and other senior government officials.
