The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas,(rtd) has called on religious organisations across Nigeria to develop strategic economic programmes aimed at fostering industrial growth to tackle youth unemployment

Vice Admiral Ibas made the appeal while receiving a delegation from the Niger Delta Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, led by their Moderator, Rt. Rev. Nneoyi Ubi Arikpo, during a courtesy visit at Government House, Port Harcourt, on Thursday.

Recognising the influential role of faith-based institutions in shaping society, the Administrator emphasised the need for collaborative efforts between government and religious bodies to align spiritual leadership with economic empowerment.

“I commend the church for its commitment to peace, moral values, and community development. Growing up, the church played a pivotal role in instilling discipline and direction. Today, religious institutions remain essential partners in sustaining peace and restoring public confidence in governance,” he said.

Expressing concern over the rising moral decadence in society despite the proliferation of religious groups, Vice Admiral Ibas urged church leaders to intensify efforts in mentoring youths, combating social vices such as cultism and drug abuse, and promoting environmental stewardship.

“We cannot have a nation where people are unwilling to contribute to nation-building. The church must take the lead in guiding our youths away from destructive habits and toward productive engagement. Let us also support advocacy for environmental sanitation, keeping our churches and surroundings clean,” he stated.

Reflecting on his personal upbringing, the Administrator acknowledged the Presbyterian Church’s contributions to stability and moral guidance in Rivers State and the Niger Delta region.

He assured the delegation that the state government would participate in the Niger Delta Synod’s 10th-anniversary celebrations and consider their requests.

In his remarks, Rt. Rev. Arikpo commended Vice Admiral Ibas for maintaining peace, stabilising governance, and ensuring effective public service delivery in Rivers State.

He extended an official invitation to the Administrator for the Synod’s anniversary while reaffirming the church’s commitment to praying for the success of his administration.
