Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has dismissed speculations about a possible defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that he remains firmly rooted in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Makinde made the clarification on Thursday after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Responding to questions on whether he was considering joining the ruling party, following the recent defection of some PDP governors, the Oyo State governor said plainly, “I am comfortable in the PDP.”
He explained that Nigeria’s current challenges require collaboration across party lines, stressing that governance should transcend partisan interests.
“I’m comfortable in the PDP. There are situations in this country where a bipartisan approach is required. It should not be about APC talking alone or PDP talking alone. What matters is putting the best foot forward in the interest of the nation,” Makinde said.

According to him, addressing national issues effectively would require contributions from all stakeholders, irrespective of political affiliation.
Makinde arrived at the Presidential Villa shortly after Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, who recently defected from the PDP to the APC. Both governors were received separately before meeting with the President.
The Oyo governor was a leading member of the G5 group of PDP governors who opposed the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2023 general election.
