Nigeria has been thrown into fresh turmoil following shocking confessions by arrested bandits in Kwara State, who alleged that government officials supplied them with weapons, vehicles, and logistics to carry out deadly attacks across the state.
The disturbing revelations, which surfaced a few days ago, emerged after a joint security operation led to the arrest of several suspected bandits operating in forested areas of Kwara. In a widely circulated interrogation video now viral on social media, one suspect was seen pointing at recovered rifles and a vehicle, claiming they were provided by the Ilorin based state government. The suspect alleged that officials worked directly with their group and were fully aware of their operations.
Another translation of the footage circulating online echoed the same claim, alleging that government officials were responsible for supplying arms used to attack innocent civilians. The video, shared widely on Facebook, X, and WhatsApp, has attracted millions of views and triggered nationwide outrage, fear, and renewed debate over alleged state complicity in Nigeria’s worsening insecurity crisis.
The confessions have taken on deeper significance following recent deadly attacks in Kwara. In November 2025, armed men stormed the Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, killing at least three worshippers and abducting 38 others during an evening service. Survivors later freed in a military operation described the forests as being under the full control of bandits, a claim that now appears chillingly consistent with the suspects’ statements.
Public reaction has been swift and fierce. Nigerians across social media platforms expressed anger and disbelief, with many questioning how armed groups could operate so freely without official backing. Several commentators described the allegations as a betrayal of public trust, while others linked the claims to past cases where criminals accused political figures of sponsorship.
Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi described the allegations as disturbing and called for an immediate, transparent, and independent investigation. He warned that repeated confessions implicating public officials, if ignored, would further erode confidence in government and security institutions. A former Kwara lawmaker also called for a federal level inquiry to determine the extent of any official involvement.
Analysts say the psychological impact of the revelations is profound, especially in communities still recovering from recent attacks. Residents in parts of Kwara report growing fear, reduced social activities, and deep suspicion, as the idea that those entrusted with security could be aiding violent groups strikes at the heart of public confidence.

Security experts and investigative journalists have long warned that arms trafficking and banditry thrive on high level protection. The Kwara confessions have revived those warnings, reinforcing concerns that insecurity in Nigeria is sustained not only by criminals in the forests but also by powerful interests within the system.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Kwara State Government nor federal security agencies have issued an official response to the allegations. However, pressure continues to mount for a thorough investigation, as Nigerians demand clarity, accountability, and justice.
With the video still spreading and public anger growing, many see this moment as a potential turning point. Whether it leads to genuine accountability or fades into silence may determine not only Kwara’s future, but the credibility of Nigeria’s fight against banditry and terrorism.
