The House of Representatives has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to simplify its virtual Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise in the rural constituencies by urgently deploying physical enumerators to conduct registration process.
Members at plenary on Thursday said the advice became pertinent to safeguard large percentage of the nation’s electorate from being disenfranchised, especially those just attaining the voting age and rural dwellers that lacked capacity in simple technology and proper enlightenment to enhance the exercise.
Rep Abubakar Yalleman (Jigawa State) who raised the matter at plenary was emphatic that machinery for the virtual Continuous registration of voters, simple as it seemed, was out of the reach and comprehension of the vast rural populace.
“Most rural constituencies in the country are at a disadvantaged position on the exercise due to non availability of Registration Centers and officials, inadequate power supply as well as operational tools such as simple GSM phones and low level or non existence enlightenment programs.
Majority Leader of the House, Rep Alhassan Ado Dogowa in his contribution, urged INEC to ensure the provision of adequate number of polling centers in secured public places in order to ensure, seamless elections in the country.
The House Leader was of the opinion that secured polling centers are a sin-qua-non to a successful election and institutionalization of Democracy and its principles.
