The House of Representatives has announced plans to host the 11th General Assembly of the West Africa Association of Public Accounts Committees (WAAPAC) Annual Conference.

The conference is scheduled to be held in Abuja from Monday, September 8, to Friday, September 12, 2025.

The conference is set to bring together lawmakers, auditors-general, parliamentary staff, and financial experts from across West Africa. Delegates from Swatini, Kenya, and South Africa, alongside sister networks such as the African Organization of Public Accounts Committees (AFROPAC) and the Southern African Development Community Organization of Public Accounts Committees (SADCOPAC), are also expected.

With the theme “Strengthening Parliamentary Oversight of Public Debt: The Role of Finance and Public Accounts Committees,” discussions will center on how parliaments can exercise stronger oversight over borrowing and public spending, as many African countries, including Nigeria, face mounting debt servicing burdens that threaten development financing.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, is expected to declare the conference open at the House’s Temporary Chamber on Monday, September 8. Accreditation begins at 8:30 a.m.

Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Rep. Bamidele Salam, while speaking ahead of the event, described the hosting of WAAPAC in Abuja as an opportunity for Nigeria to showcase itself on the sub-regional stage.

“Nigeria is pleased to be hosting WAAPAC in Abuja this year. It is an opportunity to showcase our country while convening one of the most impactful sub-regional conferences on parliamentary oversight in the world,” Salam said.

He added that the conference would allow committees to learn from each other and exchange practical knowledge on financial oversight.

The General Assembly will deliberate on regional debt trends, strategies for sustainable debt management, and the role of parliaments in ensuring transparency and accountability. According to the organisers, the conference will end with the adoption of country-specific action plans to strengthen legislative oversight.
