Nigerian highlife musician and cultural icon, Mike Ejeagha has died at the age of 95.
His eldest son, Emma Ejeagha, announced that he died around 8 pm on Friday, at a hospital in Enugu, following an extended illness.
Born on April 4, 1930, in Imezi Owa, Enugu State, Ejeagha was known for his unique style, combining storytelling with traditional Igbo music.
His career took off in the 1960s, and he became a household name in the 1980s with popular songs like “Omekagu,” “Uwa Mgbede Ka Mma,” and “Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche.”
Ejeagha was deeply respected for his commitment to preserving the Igbo Language and culture through his music.

He recorded over 300 songs, many of which are now kept in Nigeria’s National Archives. His music not only provided entertainment but also shared valuable life lessons through the use of proverbs and stories.
In 2024, his 1983 song “Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche” gained renewed popularity, inspiring a dance challenge that introduced his music to a younger audience.
Mike Ejeagha’s passing marks the end of an important era in Nigeria’s music history.
However, his legacy will continue to live on, influencing future musicians and resonating with fans in the heart of Igbo culture.
