A fresh outbreak of conflict in Taraba State has resulted in over 30 fatalities and scores displaced, following assaults on the villages of Munga and Magami in the Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of the state.
The attacks, which appear to have been executed by suspected armed herders early on Saturday morning, also led to the devastation of homes and properties, intensifying anxiety among local residents and overshadowing the state’s recent efforts to attract investment.
Survivors and those who witnessed the violence, voiced strong disapproval at what they deemed the state government’s slow and inadequate response to ongoing security challenges in the area.
Many expressed frustration over the absence of Governor Agbu Kefas to the affected villages, contrasting his response to that of Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, who is known for his proactive measures and visits to conflict-affected areas.
Karim-Lamido has increasingly emerged as a focal point for violence, with the recent attack in Munga Lelau adding to a series of deadly events.
However, in a statement released through his Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communications, Emmanuel Bello, Gov. Kefas denounced the attacks as “atrocious and intolerable.”
He assured the populace that those behind the acts would face legal consequences.

“The safety of our citizens is my utmost concern,” stated the governor.
“We have put in place all essential security protocols to avert additional violence and ensure accountability for those responsible.”
Gov. Kefas appealed to the community members for their collaboration with law enforcement agencies, underscoring the importance of vigilance and the reporting of any suspicious behaviour.
He encouraged a calm environment, while reiterating the administration’s dedication to restoring order and security.
Regarding the incident, the Taraba State Police Command indicated that tensions flared after a 15-year-old boy, Isah Ishaku from Munga Doso, was reportedly attacked with a machete by an unidentified assailant while working on his farm.
Police spokesperson in the state, James Leshen noted that a combined effort involving regular police and the Police Mobile Force have been initiated to address the situation in the affected areas.
Leshen mentioned that measures are being taken to reestablish peace and capture those responsible for the violence.
“Enhanced patrols have started in the area, and community leaders are being involved to facilitate mediation and reduce tensions,” he said.
