Halt impeachment move against Fubara or face national crisis, APC Group warns

A pressure group within the All Progressives Congress, the APC Progressive Mandate Group, has called for the immediate suspension of the impeachment proceedings against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, warning that the action is unconstitutional, politically driven and capable of destabilising the state.

The group said the impeachment process currently before the Rivers State House of Assembly violates constitutional provisions and directly undermines the peace agreement brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resolve the prolonged political crisis in the state.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by its national coordinator, Comrade Ayodele Alonge, the group described the impeachment move as legally defective and procedurally unsound, cautioning that it could reopen political hostilities in Rivers State if not stopped.

According to the group, the impeachment effort goes beyond legislative overreach and amounts to a direct affront to President Tinubu, who personally intervened to reconcile Governor Fubara, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The Assembly had accused the governor of several infractions, including alleged extra budgetary spending, the demolition of the Assembly complex, withholding funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission and failure to comply with a Supreme Court judgment on legislative autonomy. Similar allegations were also levelled against the deputy governor.

However, the APC Progressive Mandate Group insisted that the accusations cannot justify impeachment, especially in light of the reconciliation agreement reached under the supervision of the President. The group recalled that Fubara resumed full duties after signing a peace pact with Wike and other political actors, stressing that reviving impeachment proceedings contradicts the spirit and letter of that settlement.

The group warned that reopening the crisis would amount to a rejection of the President’s authority and could erode public confidence in the federal government’s capacity to resolve political disputes through dialogue.

It also faulted the Assembly’s reliance on the Rivers State budget passed by the National Assembly during the period of emergency rule, arguing that the lawmakers lack the legal standing to challenge its execution by the executive arm.

The group further pointed out that Governor Fubara’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC in December 2025 had significantly altered the political landscape in Rivers State, strengthening the ruling party’s influence and triggering defections by prominent figures, including former PDP national chairman, Uche Secondus, and ex-Governor Peter Odili.

According to the statement, the impeachment attempt now threatens to reverse the political gains secured by the APC through reconciliation and consensus building, and could plunge the state back into instability.

The group accused lawmakers loyal to Wike of orchestrating the impeachment for narrow political interests and called on the National Assembly to intervene urgently to protect constitutional order. It demanded an immediate halt to the impeachment process and a public apology to President Tinubu, warning that allowing the move to continue could set a dangerous precedent across the country.
