Unknown gunmen have reportedly invaded Igama communty in the Okpokwu LGA of Benue State, killing several residents and razing down many houses.
Catherine Anene, Benue police spokesperson, confirmed the attack which took place on Sunday, adding that police officers were deployed to restore peace in the community.
However, Anene, did not give the number of casualties and houses razed, saying there was no official report on that yet.
She said, “A team was sent to manage that incident. I have not received details of it, but I’m aware that there was an attack in Okpokwu. I want to get an official report from officers on the ground before I can talk on casualties.”
On razed properties, she said “I don’t have that detail. They only confirmed to me that there is an attack and that they are moving in. I’m still expecting reports from them.”

Contrary to the police statement, however, the Federal Lawmaker representing Ado, Ogbadibu and Okpokwu Federal Constituency, Francis Agbo Otta, in a statement said no few than thirty persons were killed during the attack on Igama Community of Ojigo Ward.
He said, “Growing up in Utonkon District of Ado LGA, I knew Igama in Ojigo Ward of Okpokwu LGA as one of the most peaceful communities in Benue South until recently when terrorists turned it into a cesspool of blood.
“I, therefore, condemn the killing of 30 innocent people, and still counting… I have contacted security agents who have responded appropriately.”
This is coming a few months after similar attacks in other parts of the state.
Recall that in march scores of persons were killed in Guma, Kwande and Gwer west LGAs of the state, when gunmen invaded communities in the areas.
