Gunmen suspected to be bandits have killed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Jibia Local Government Area, Abdullahi Rano in an early Wednesday morning attack at the Magama-Jibia town.

Rano was killed when he led security operatives including troops of the Nigeria Army to repel the gunmen who stormed the town at about 2 a.m.

It was also learnt that an officer was injured during the attack.

A source said the terrorists stormed the town in their numbers and started shooting sporadically.

He said that the terrorists first visited the house of one Haliru Mai Bakin Mai located at Magama-Jibia and abducted his wife.

The DPO was said to have led a reinforcement of military and paramilitary personnel to engage the terrorists in a gun fight, during which he was shot and killed.

A deputy village head of Mazanya, Abubakar Sani confirmed the attack.

Another opinion leader in Magama-Jibia who pleaded anonymity also confirmed the incident, adding that the situation was already calm in the town as at 9 a.m on Wednesday.

He added that security personnel were seen patrolling the community, ostensibly to forestall another attack.

Spokesman for the police command in the state, SP Gambo Isah did not immediately respond to calls and text messages on the issue.

Isah, however, posted a picture of the late DPO on the command’s WhatsApp platform with a label ‘RIP’.
