Armed gunmen have carried out a violent raid on a Fulani leader’s settlement on the outskirts of Lafiyagi town, the headquarters of Edu Local Government Area in Kwara State, abducting several women and children, including infants, and killing one resident.

According to local accounts, the attackers stormed the Fulani settlement (ruga) and seized two wives of the Fulani leader along with their children. Among those kidnapped was a newborn baby less than one month old.

The assailants also killed a man in the community during the attack and abducted his son before escaping into surrounding forested areas.

Community sources say the kidnappers have since contacted relatives, demanding a ransom of ₦100 million for the release of the victims.

The incident has further highlighted the worsening security situation in parts of north-central Nigeria, where rural communities and pastoral settlements have increasingly come under attack by armed groups.

Residents say the assault has left the area in fear, as families continue to grapple with repeated cases of kidnapping and violence targeting both farming and herding communities.

Security authorities have yet to release an official statement on the latest attack, while search-and-rescue efforts are expected to continue in the affected region.
