The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, and the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, are under intense pressure to defect to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
This revelation was made in a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of APGA, Ejimofor Opara, following the party’s 16th National Working Committee (NWC) meeting held at its national headquarters in Abuja.
According to Opara, the NWC has mandated the Deputy National Chairman (South), Chief Uche Nwegbo, to lead a high-powered delegation tasked with initiating formal engagements with both governors.
The move, he noted, is aimed at consolidating APGA’s influence in the South-East geopolitical zone and enhancing its stature as a formidable national political force.
The resolution to reach out to Governors Otti and Mbah was the outcome of a motion moved by the party’s Vice Chairman for the South-East, Rev. Augustine Ehiemere.
Ehiemere stated that the current political climate in the country necessitates strategic realignment and broader coalition-building among progressive-minded leaders.

“APGA, renowned for its pro-people policies and unwavering commitment to the welfare of the poor and vulnerable, sees this development as a pivotal step toward expanding its base and amplifying its developmental agenda,” Opara stated.
He added that the potential defection of the two governors both of whom command significant political capital and public goodwill would signal a new era of unity and cooperation among Southeast leaders.
It would also serve as a counterweight to the dominance of the two major national parties, while reinforcing APGA’s position as the political home of Ndigbo.
“The National Working Committee’s decision is a testament to APGA’s resolve to build a stronger, more inclusive platform for progressive governance in Nigeria.
“We are committed to leaving no one behind and believe that the inclusion of Governors Otti and Mbah will mark a transformative moment for the party and the nation,” Opara added.
If the defection materializes, it will be the most significant political shift in the region, since the 2023 general elections, potentially heralding a broader realignment ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
