The political landscape in Adamawa State is bracing for a major realignment as Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri is set to formally defect from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, a move that could dramatically reshape the state’s power dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Chairman of the APC in Adamawa State, Barrister Idris Shuaibu, confirmed on Tuesday that Governor Fintiri has already aligned himself with the ruling party and is only awaiting an official declaration, expected within days. Speaking at the APC state secretariat in Yola, Shuaibu described the governor’s defection as a settled matter, stressing that all that remains is a public announcement.
According to him, the formal declaration is anticipated between now and the middle of the month, barring any unexpected developments. He disclosed that the party is making advanced preparations to receive the governor and his supporters ahead of the APC national convention scheduled to hold on or before the 20th of the month.
Shuaibu explained that extensive consultations have been held at various levels to ensure a smooth and orderly integration of Governor Fintiri and his political structure into the APC, noting that the party is fully prepared for the political impact of the move.
The APC chairman made the disclosure while welcoming Engineer Diaulhaq Abubakar, who has officially declared his intention to contest the Adamawa governorship election in 2027 on the platform of the APC. He assured all aspirants and new members that the party operates on fairness and equal opportunity, emphasizing that commitment and loyalty, not political seniority, determine advancement within the APC.

Shuaibu revealed that Engineer Diaulhaq Abubakar is the fifteenth aspirant to signal interest in the Dougeri Government House race, a development he said reflects the growing strength and popularity of the APC in Adamawa State.
Speaking to journalists after his declaration, Engineer Diaulhaq said his decision to run was driven by a desire to promote inclusive governance and people-centred development. He pledged to boost internally generated revenue, invest heavily in critical infrastructure, expand skills acquisition programmes for youths and women, and ensure balanced development across all parts of the state.
He said he is entering the race with a clear vision to build a more inclusive, prosperous, and united Adamawa State.
