Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has donated N5 million and a plot of land to each of the 22 families affected by the devastating road accident that claimed the lives of Kano’s National Sports Festival heroes.
The tragic incident, which shook the entire nation, occurred in Dakatsalle town, Bebeji Local Government Area, just 50 kilometers from Kano, when the team was returning from the 2024 National Sports Festival in Ogun State.
The victims included top-performing athletes, coaches, a journalist, medical staff, drivers, and mechanics who had proudly represented Kano and Nigeria.
Before the fatal crash, the athletes had delivered an impressive performance at the festival, clinching six gold, 13 silver, and 10 bronze medals. Their journey home turned tragic, but their achievements remain a source of pride for the state.
Governor Yusuf’s symbolic act of support, amounting to over N110 million in cash in addition to 22 land allocations, was confirmed in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information Strategy, Ibrahim Adam. The announcement, shared via the governor’s official Facebook page on Wednesday, emphasized the government’s commitment to standing by the grieving families.

“The Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has donated a plot of land and N5 million to each of the 22 families of the deceased Kano athletes,” the statement read.
This emotional and generous gesture has drawn praise from citizens and sports lovers across the country, who have described it as a rare show of leadership and empathy. The Kano State government also hinted at plans to immortalize the fallen athletes whose lives were cut short in service to the state and country.
