Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has charged the newly inaugurated governing council of the Kashim Ibrahim University with the responsibility of promoting innovative research, community development, and academic excellence to support the state’s ongoing post-insurgency recovery efforts.

The governor made the call during the formal inauguration of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the council, Dr. Muhammadu Indimi, along with other council members, at the Government House in Maiduguri.

Describing the university as a critical institution in rebuilding the region, Gov. Zulum emphasized the importance of research and innovation in addressing the unique socio-economic challenges caused by over a decade of insurgency in the North-East.

“The challenges before you are as significant as the opportunities,” Gov. Zulum said.

“We task you with fostering a culture of rigorous research, innovative teaching, and community-relevant curricula that directly respond to our post-insurgency recovery and development needs.”

He highlighted the growth of the university since its establishment, noting that student enrollment has risen from 300 to approximately 10,000 in the past six years.

Gov. Zulum urged the council to uphold high standards of academic integrity, transparency, and efficient resource management, stressing that the welfare of both staff and students must remain a top priority.

“You are now the legal custodians of this university’s destiny,” he stated.

“Your mandate includes providing strategic direction, ensuring financial prudence, and safeguarding academic excellence.”

He reiterated his administration’s strong commitment to educational reform and investment, citing the construction of 139 new mega schools, the rehabilitation of numerous existing ones, the recruitment of thousands of teachers, and the establishment of six centres of excellence.

Quoting the university’s enabling law, Gov. Zulum affirmed the legal basis of the council’s authority, empowering it to oversee the policy, finances, and administration of the institution.

Congratulating the newly appointed members, he praised their qualifications, integrity, and dedication to education and community service.

“Your selection was not by chance,” he said.

“It was based on proven integrity, experience, and passion. In particular, I commend our Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Muhammadu Indimi, whose legendary philanthropy and unwavering support for education are widely acknowledged.”

In his response, Dr. Indimi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and reaffirmed his commitment to contributing meaningfully to the development of the institution.

“I accepted this position because I have to support my state,” Indimi said. “With my able lieutenants, we promise to bring positive change to the university.”

The inauguration marks a significant step in the state’s strategy to strengthen the governance of its tertiary institutions as part of broader post-insurgency rebuilding efforts.
