Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has made a passionate appeal to the federal government to take swift and decisive action to prevent the strategic town of Marte from falling into the hands of Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents.
Gov. Zulum, who personally visited Marte and spent the night coordinating security logistics alongside the army commanders and local volunteers, described the situation as dire and warned of the consequences if the town is not held.
Speaking to journalists, the governor highlighted the vulnerability of the area, revealing that Marte had been attacked just days earlier, prompting over 20,000 residents to flee to Dikwa Town.
“Marte was resettled about four years ago, but unfortunately, over the last three days, it was ransacked and displaced again,” Gov. Zulum said.
“This huge number of displaced persons is a concern, as allowing them to stay in camps may expose many, especially youths, to insurgent recruitment.”

The governor praised the efforts of the army, noting that with their support, Marte was resecured and residents had begun returning.
However, he stressed the urgent need for sustained federal support to maintain control of the area.
“Previously, Marte Local Government had over 300 towns and villages. Today, only one remains standing.
“If we cannot protect this one, we risk losing the entire local government to insurgents. That would be unacceptable,” the governor warned.
He called on the federal government and the military leadership to consolidate efforts and ensure the town remains under control, emphasizing the town’s symbolic and strategic importance.
Gov. Zulum reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering support for security agencies, pledging to continue backing efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability to Borno State.
“On my part as governor of Borno State, I will do everything within my power to support our gallant military in their efforts toward lasting peace in our beloved state,” he said.
