Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has announced plans to resettle 5,000 displaced persons from five communities in Bama Local Government Area before the end of the rainy season to enable them to participate in this year’s farming activities.

The affected communities include Goniri, Bula Kuriye, Mayanti, Abbaram, and Darajamal.

Gov. Zulum made the announcement during a visit to the Shehu of Bama, Dr. Umar ibn Kyari Umar El-Kanemi, on Friday.

He disclosed that the construction of 1,000 transitional shelters had commenced in each of the identified communities, with Darajamal’s housing units already completed.

“We are committed to resettling all displaced persons living in IDP camps back to their communities. Construction of transitional shelters has started in Mayanti, Goniri, Bula Kuriye, and Abbaram, while that of Darajamal has been completed,” the governor said.

“I have also directed the digging of trenches to fortify the communities.”

Gov. Zulum highlighted the importance of resettling the communities in time for the farming season, calling agriculture “our greatest treasure.”

“Our target is to ensure that they participate in this cropping season,” he said.

“I will interface with the Commanding Officer and Civilian JTF leadership to strategise on how best to secure the areas.”

He also revealed that additional security measures had been put in place in Nguro Soye, a farming community on the outskirts of Bama town.

According to him, logistics support has been provided to the military and Civilian JTF, and six months’ allowances have been approved for local security volunteers.

“While returning from Gwoza, I stopped at the military formation in Banki Junction, where we discussed intensifying security in Nguro Soye and surrounding areas,” Zulum added.

In his remarks, the Shehu of Bama commended Gov. Zulum for his sustained efforts in resettling displaced persons and ensuring the safety of communities.

“I appreciate the governor for resettling the people of Darajamal and the ongoing efforts to return more of our people to their homes,” the monarch said.

He further appealed for increased support to the Civilian JTF to help safeguard farmers and farmlands throughout the rainy season.
