Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to revitalizing the leather and hides industry as a key driver of economic growth in the state.
Gov. Zulum made the declaration during a courtesy visit by the Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Leather Science and Technology (NILEST), Zaria, Dr. Auwal Imam, at the Government House, Maiduguri.
Highlighting the sector’s potential, the governor emphasized its importance not only for Borno State, but also for the nation’s economic development.
He revealed efforts to revive the long-defunct Neitel Shoes Company, which has been dormant for over two decades, stating that political will and determination could transform the industry.
The governor lauded the recent upgrade of NILEST’s Maiduguri Extension Centre to a regional centre, noting that it would improve coordination of leather-related activities across the six states in the region.
“We will provide the necessary support to promote the sector. With commitment and transparency, we can achieve great results. However, corruption will hinder progress. I assure you that the Borno State Government is ready to partner with you for the growth and development of the leather industry,” Gov. Zulum said.

Gov. Zulum also announced the immediate dispatch of 60 indigenes of Borno State to NILEST’s headquarters in Zaria, for specialized training in leather technology, footwear design, and innovation.
“As the chairman of the presidential committee on leather policy, I will ensure we thoroughly review the policy document to identify more opportunities for partnerships and development,” he added.
NILEST’s Director General, Dr. Auwal Imam, expressed gratitude to the governor for his unwavering support for the leather industry.
He also announced the formal upgrade of the Maiduguri Centre to a regional centre and introduced Dr. Usman Busuguma, a Borno State indigene, as the new north east regional manager.
