Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sponsoring more indigenes of the state to study medical and allied health courses at the Federal University of Health Sciences (FUHSA), Azare, Bauchi State.
Gov. Zulum made the pledge during a courtesy visit by the FUHSA Governing Council, led by its Pro-Chancellor, Samuel Adejare, at the Government House, Maiduguri.
“Borno State will continue to send students to FUHSA. We require more admission slots for our indigenes in medicine, radiography, nursing, and other related courses. If there are states not utilizing their quotas, we are ready to take them—just contact us,” the governor stated.
The governor emphasized the urgency of increasing the number of medical professionals, particularly in the North East, where there is a severe shortage of healthcare personnel.
“Human resources in healthcare are not only inadequate in the North East, but across Northern Nigeria. There is a need for governments in the sub-region to support FUHSA, so it can produce more graduates to bridge this gap. This is why I am committed to supporting the university,” he added.
As Chairman of the North East Governors’ Forum, Gov. Zulum pledged to rally support from his counterparts to strengthen the university, particularly in areas of security and infrastructure development.
He also advised the university’s leadership to prioritize the consolidation of existing programmes before expanding into new courses to maintain high academic and professional standards.

In recognition of Gov. Zulum’s support, institution has named a newly equipped laboratory after him.
Adejare commended the governor for his contributions, including a N50 million donation used to procure state-of-the-art laboratory equipment for the faculty of dentistry.
The investment, he said has contributed to the faculty’s recent high rating in a National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation exercise.
“We are equally grateful for your intervention in constructing two blocks of six apartments each within the university staff quarters. These facilities will ease the acute shortage of staff accommodation, fostering a more conducive environment for academic excellence and institutional growth,” Adejare said.
He also acknowledged Borno State’s scholarship programme for FUHSA students and announced that the NUC has approved 13 additional courses for the university.
