Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has reaffirmed his commitment to restoring the dignity and livelihoods of victims affected by the devastating 2024 flood, as he flagged- off the reconstruction of the Alau Dam.
The dam, which collapsed on September 10, 2024, led to catastrophic flooding that claimed lives and displaced thousands.
Built between 1984 and 1986, the dam served as a crucial water reservoir for irrigation, and portable drinking water supply in Maiduguri, and surrounding communities.
Gov. Zulum, speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony held at the weekend at Alau community in Jere Local Government Area of the state, described the project as a lifeline for the people of Borno State.
“This groundbreaking ceremony is a testament to the federal government’s unwavering commitment to rebuilding Borno State, not just in terms of infrastructure, but in restoring the livelihoods and dignity of our citizens,” Gov. Zulum stated.
He outlined several key benefits of the dam’s rehabilitation, including improved agricultural activities, enhanced water supply, flood control, economic diversification, and community empowerment.
“The project will significantly boost irrigation capacity, allowing farmers to cultivate more land, increase their yields, and contribute to food security. This will create employment opportunities, and spur economic development in the state,” the governor added.
Gov. Zulum expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, for swiftly approving the reconstruction of the collapsed dam, emphasizing the crucial role of water resources in sustainable development.
Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, who was the special guest at the event, disclosed that the rehabilitation would be carried out in two phases over a 24 – month period.
“Phase one, which will run from February to September 2025, will focus on critical interventions to mitigate immediate flood risks.
“Phase two, beginning in October 2025, will involve extensive dredging and structural enhancements, to ensure the dam’s long-term functionality, and resilience,” Prof. Utsev explained.

He further noted that upon completion, the dam would significantly improve portable water supply, control flooding, support irrigation farming, and revamp socio-economic activities in the region.
Also speaking, the Borno State Commissioner for Water Resources, Tijani Alkali, commended the federal government for its timely intervention, emphasizing the dam’s vital role in the state’s economic and agricultural sustainability.
In addition to the dam reconstruction, the governor also announced the approval of a primary school, and hospital for Alau community, to enhance access to education and healthcare services.
The reconstruction of the Alau Dam, marks a significant milestone in Borno State’s post-disaster recovery efforts, with the governor reaffirming his administration’s commitment to rebuilding critical infrastructure, and improving the lives of residents.
