Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has empowered 150 almajirai who recently completed vocational training under a state-backed initiative with working tools and financial support.
The beneficiaries were trained in a range of trades, including electrical and solar installation, leatherwork, welding, carpentry, and building construction.
The programme, launched by Gov. Zulum’s administration, aims to equip almajiri children traditionally engaged in Islamic schooling with practical skills for economic independence and social integration.
During the presentation ceremony, Gov. Zulum reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive education and youth empowerment.
“By attending this training programme, you have taken a crucial step towards securing your future. Equipped with new skills, you now have the power to transform your dreams into reality.
“Our government remains committed to supporting Sangaya Islamic education and will continue investing in resources to improve the quality of learning,” he said.
Gov. Zulum also expressed concern over reports of child abuse within the Islamic learning environment.
“We will not tolerate any form of molestation or violence against almajiri children. Every child deserves to be treated with dignity, regardless of their background.

“This is a call to action for all parents, educators, and community leaders to uphold the rights of our Sangaya learners,” the governor stated.
Chairman of the Borno Sangaya Board, Sheikh Kalifa Abulfatahi, noted that the vocational training initiative was launched in 2023 to address the educational and socio-economic challenges faced by almajirai.
He highlighted the collaboration between the state and the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEC) in implementing the programme.
The state Commissioner for Education, Lawan Wakilbe, revealed that efforts are underway to certify the almajiri learners through partnerships with academic institutions, including the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies.
The initiative is part of Gov. Zulum’s broader strategy to reform almajiri education and promote self-reliance among vulnerable youth across Borno State.
