Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has launched a large scale food distribution initiative, aimed at supporting 250, 000 residents affected by last year’s devastating floods.

The distribution, which began on Wednesday, covers the 27 local government areas in the state.

At the flag -off, Gov. Zulum emphasized that the initiative is meant to ease the hardship caused by the disaster, which severely impacted businesses and livelihoods across the state.

He stated that 100, 000 beneficiaries within Maiduguri metropolis, and its environs will receive food aid, while 150, 000 others from 25 local government areas will also be included in the programme.

“We are all aware that our beloved state has yet to fully recover from the devastating flood disaster that recently affected Maiduguri, Jere, and other communities. Many families are still counting their losses,” Gov. Zulum said.

He noted that the distribution of the aid items was also strategically timed, ahead of the Ramadan to provide the much-needed relief for vulnerable families.

In a significant policy shift, the governor also announced a 90 percent reduction in palliative distributions that were previously allocated to victims of Boko Haram insurgency.

He attributed the decision to improved agricultural output in the state, which has reduced dependency on government aid.

“Our perseverance has reinforced my belief that agriculture is not just a means of survival, but a powerful tool for economic empowerment.

“We are committed to creating an enabling environment for our youth and entrepreneurs to engage in agribusiness and other productive ventures,” Gov. Zulum stated.

He further explained that the state will continue to invest in agricultural development, infrastructure, and support programmes to ensure long-term economic stability.

“This approach, will not only empower our people to become self-reliant but will also significantly reduce government spending on palliatives,” he added.

Gov. Zulum expressed gratitude to the federal government, neighboring states, and individuals who have contributed to the well-being of Borno residents.

“We commend the federal government, sister states, and kind-hearted individuals and organizations from across the country. Their solidarity and generosity have been a source of great encouragement,” he said.
