Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has commissioned a 72-unit housing complex for teachers in Mafa Local Government Area, as part of his administration’s efforts to improve the welfare of educators and strengthen the education sector in rural communities.
The new complex, unveiled during a ceremony on Tuesday, consists of 24 two-bedroom semi-detached units and 48 three-bedroom apartments across eight three-storey blocks.
Each unit is equipped with essential amenities to ensure a comfortable and secure living environment for teaching staff and their families.
Speaking at the event, Gov. Zulum emphasized the importance of teacher welfare in achieving quality education, particularly in communities recovering from over a decade of insurgency.

“We consider the welfare of teachers as fundamental to revitalizing education in Borno. Providing decent and secure housing is one of our administration’s key priorities,” he said while handing over keys to the beneficiaries.
The beneficiaries of the housing project include teachers from both primary and secondary schools within the local government.
The state Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Lawan Wakilbe, praised the initiative, describing it as a significant step towards supporting educators and encouraging commitment to service.
“This project is a testament to the governor’s commitment to transforming the education sector by addressing one of the most pressing challenges, the lack of suitable accommodation for teachers,” Wakilbe stated.
The housing initiative is part of a broader push by the Zulum administration to rebuild infrastructure and restore social services in communities affected by insurgency across the state.
