Governor Babagana Zulum, of Borno State, has approved N8 billion for the payment of outstanding pensions and gratuities owed to retired primary school teachers and other civil servants in the state.
The funds as announced by the governor, will cover liabilities accrued from 2019 – 2021.
Announcing the approval on Wednesday at the Government House, Maiduguri, the governor emphasised his administration’s commitment to addressing its financial obligations to retirees.
Gov. Zulum highlighted previous efforts, including the release of N3 billion in 2019 to clear gratuities for 1, 684 retirees who left the civil service between 2013 and 2019, and the disbursement of over N12 billion in 2020 for retirees from the state and local government civil service between 2013 and 2017.

“Since I took over in 2019, we have paid about N25 billion for the settlement of gratuities for those who have served with the local and state governments,” Gov. Zulum stated.
Zulum further assured that his administration will settle all outstanding pension and gratuity liabilities before the end of his tenure in 2027.
“Insha Allah, I will clear all the backlog of gratuities before I leave office,” he affirmed.
The move, according to the governor, underscores his administration commitment to ensuring financial stability and security for retired workers in Borno State.
