Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, has declared a complete ban on the distribution and sales of alcoholic drinks statewide.
The governor, who unveiled the ban on Tuesday, connected the increase in criminal acts and social issues in Maiduguri, along with its surroundings, to the involvement of military staff and law enforcement agencies.
Gov. Zulum announced the ban at the launch of a committee instructed to terminate illegal establishments such as hotels, brothels, and hideouts while addressing the issue of social misconduct.
This event was held at the Government House in Maiduguri.
“I am pleased that military officers are present here, notably from the armed forces, police, and others, as many of these offences were committed by whom?
“Some individuals include dismissed military personnel, former security officers, current military staff, as well as civilians.
“There can be no unaccountable individuals in this situation if we are determined to eliminate insurgency, terrorism, and other forms of criminal behaviour from Maiduguri and the entire state,” he said.

Gov. Zulum accused both retired and active-duty security forces of encouraging criminal actions, radical tendencies, prostitution, and other immoral acts, which, he claimed, have intensified the threats of terrorism throughout the state.
By empowering the committee with a renewed objective, the governor stressed the importance of expelling criminal elements and societal decline from Maiduguri and its nearby areas.
He stated that the prohibition on the sale and use of alcohol was a direct response to the rising occurrences of cult activities, gang warfare, prostitution, drug misuse, violent behavior, and theft, all of which have led to considerable loss of life and property.
To strengthen the committee’s initiatives, Gov. Zulum incorporated representatives from the military, police, civil defense, and the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) into its operations.
