Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has approved the release of N850 million for the rehabilitation and upgrading of boreholes in Maiduguri and surrounding communities hit by recent flooding.
The funds will be used for the procurement of pumps, accessories, and other components to restore access to clean water following the devastating flood of September 10, 2024, which caused widespread water scarcity in the region.
General Manager of the Borno State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), Mohammed Aliyu, made the announcement while speaking to journalists in Maiduguri.
He confirmed that suppliers have already begun delivering the necessary materials.
“In response to the water crisis caused by the flood, Governor Zulum has approved N850 million for the rehabilitation and upgrade of boreholes. This will significantly improve water access in Maiduguri and surrounding local government areas,” Aliyu said.

To expedite repairs, he said the agency has set up a rapid response team to inspect and fix damaged water facilities across flood-affected communities.
The team will operate in Maiduguri, Jere, Dikwa, Mafa, Gamboru Ngala, and other impacted areas, working in collaboration with the state ministry of water resources and technical experts.
The assessment and initial repairs are expected to be completed within two weeks.
Additionally, Gov. Zulum has approved the construction of new waterworks in several communities, including Zarmari, Shaukari, Gubio, Gajiganna, Gajiram, Kaleri, and Mafa, to further expand access to potable water.
Aliyu noted that this initiative builds on the Zulum administration’s previous achievements in the water sector, which include completed waterworks in Pulka, Chibok, Azare, Moramti, and Ngarannam.
“This continued investment underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring sustainable access to clean water across Borno State,” Aliyu added.
