Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has approved a record-breaking budget of N1.2 trillion for the 2025 fiscal year, marking a significant 32.94% increase from the 2024 budget. The announcement came during the Niger State Executive Council meeting held on November 26, 2024.
According to the Commissioner of Planning, Mustapha Ndajiwo, the proposed budget allocates:
– N188.42 billion (15.68%) for recurrent expenditure.
– N1.01 trillion (84.34%) for capital projects, reflecting the administration’s focus on infrastructure and development.
The commissioner said the ambitious budget by the Governor shows his commitment to accelerating development and addressing pressing needs across Niger State.
However, the announcement has sparked widespread debate on social media, with many citizens expressing concerns about the feasibility of funding such an ambitious budget. Questions about revenue generation and transparency in implementing proposed projects dominated the discourse.
An X user Okoye Taiwo wrote “I don’t understand this estimate, where will the governor see the funds to implement his budget. This one na real fake it till you make it. All his allocation and revenue for 2025 will add to less than 300 billion, why prepare a budget of 1 trillion.”
While Its-teakay said “That’s a bold move !! And kudos
But for a state heavily dependent on FAAC, how’s the budget going to be funded?? Or it is loans as usual”

According to the Governor his administration aims to focus on key areas, including:
– Infrastructure Development: Expanding road networks, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions.
– Economic Growth: Initiatives to boost agriculture, small businesses, and job creation.
– Social Welfare: Enhancing programs that improve citizens’ quality of life.
Ndajiwo assured the public that the government would explore innovative financing methods, including public-private partnerships and external funding sources, to actualize the ambitious plan.
Compared to the 2024 budget, this year’s 32.94% increase reflects the state’s heightened focus on capital-intensive projects. Analysts are closely watching how this significant leap will be funded and executed.
Citizens have called on the government to provide a transparent breakdown of the funding strategy to ensure accountability. Many are hopeful that the increased allocation to capital expenditure will translate into tangible benefits for the people of Niger State.
