The Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the protection of lives and property with the commissioning of the newly renovated Rivers State Fire Service Headquarters and fire-fighting vehicles.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Governor Fubara emphasized that the move was part of his vision for a purpose-driven government dedicated to service delivery and the welfare of Rivers people.
Reflecting on past fire incidents that resulted in significant losses due to inadequate emergency response, the governor noted that Rivers State had long been at the mercy of multinational companies whenever fire disasters struck.
“We are all aware of our situation some years back when we were at the mercy of multinationals in responding to fire incidents. We lost properties, businesses, and even lives because we lacked an effective fire service. The Marwan and Fruit Garden markets are examples of what we lost due to inadequate fire response,” Governor Fubara stated.
However, he highlighted a recent tanker accident along OG 11, where the Rivers State Fire Service swiftly responded, preventing what could have been a major disaster. This, he said, was a testament to the government’s efforts in strengthening the state’s firefighting capacity.
Governor Fubara reiterated that the essence of governance is to serve the people, provide essential services, and protect lives and property. He assured Rivers people that his administration is focused on projects that directly impact their lives, rather than engaging in governance for political grandstanding.
“Governance is not just about occupying office but making the people happy. Some may try to discredit us, but Rivers people know that we are working for them. That is what matters,” he added.
The governor disclosed that the commissioning was not just about beautifying a building but ensuring that the facility was equipped with modern firefighting tools and well-trained personnel. He commended the Commissioner for Special Duties, the contractors, and the firefighters for their dedication and assured them of continued government support.
“You can imagine having a fire service where the men are not working, only receiving salaries at the end of the month. But today, they are back to life, knowing that they have a big responsibility to protect the lives and property of our people,” he said.

Governor Fubara revealed that in addition to the headquarters, the state government had remodeled three other fire service units strategically located within densely populated areas. These include facilities in Rumuokoro, Mile 1, Mile 2, and Mile 3, ensuring rapid response to fire incidents.
“We deliberately positioned these stations where they are most needed. In a few days, we will commission another one in Eleme to cater to communities in that axis,” he announced.
The governor urged the managers and firefighters to take ownership of the facility and ensure its proper maintenance. He reminded them that their work directly impacts the safety and well-being of Rivers residents.
“Please do not treat this facility like any other project. Take it personally, safeguard it, and protect it, knowing that lives depend on your efficiency. Your reward will come from God,” he admonished.
The commissioning of the Rivers State Fire Service Headquarters and vehicles marks a significant milestone in Governor Fubara’s administration. It highlights his commitment to strengthening emergency response services and ensuring the protection of lives and property across the state.
