Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has issued a decisive directive for all 25 Local Government Council Chairmen in the state to implement the newly approved minimum wage for council workers, starting in November 2024. This move, aimed at improving the welfare of local government employees, underscores the governor’s commitment to fair labor practices.
During a meeting on Tuesday with representatives from the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), and the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Governor Oborevwori emphasized the importance of this wage increase as a crucial step towards improving the lives of council employees and their families.

The Governor acknowledged the financial strains brought on by the Local Government Autonomy Law but insisted that council leaders prioritize the well-being of workers. He called for strict compliance with the new wage structure, reinforcing his administration’s dedication to the welfare of local government workers.
In addition to implementing the wage increase, Governor Oborevwori highlighted the need for strict adherence to procurement laws and sound financial management. He recommended a training retreat, in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), to educate council officials on budgeting and procurement best practices. This, he stressed, would foster greater financial accountability across the councils.
Governor Oborevwori’s directive to enforce the new minimum wage for council workers marks a significant step toward enhancing worker welfare and promoting transparency and accountability in local governance.
