Delta State has become the first in Nigeria to implement the newly approved minimum wage, fulfilling Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori’s commitment to support civil servants. The new wage, which became effective in October, has been welcomed with gratitude and optimism by the state’s workforce.
Governor Oborevwori first announced his dedication to workers’ welfare on May 1st, Workers’ Day, pledging that Delta would uphold whatever minimum wage was set at the federal level. This promise came amid negotiations between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) with the federal government, as labor unions worked to secure fair wages for workers across the nation.
After months of anticipation, Delta State civil servants saw Governor Oborevwori’s commitment come to life as the new minimum wage of N70,000 was finalized in July and passed into law. Wasting no time, the governor called an Executive Council meeting in August, laying the groundwork to ensure the state would lead the charge in implementing the wage adjustment.
To prepare for the rollout, Delta State formed a minimum wage harmonization committee, collaborating with representatives from NLC, TUC, and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) to finalize an actionable payment plan. By October 16, the committee had completed its work, setting the stage for immediate disbursement. Just as promised, civil servants received their increased salaries by October 28, bringing Governor Oborevwori’s vision to life.

Across Delta, civil servants expressed gratitude for the governor’s swift action. Festus Edore, a Chief Confidential Secretary, shared her relief, saying, “We had high hopes, but some of us doubted how quickly it would be done. Governor Oborevwori didn’t just talk—he acted. Seeing the increased salary in my account was a huge relief.”
Samuel Osa, a senior accountant, echoed this sentiment, noting, “The new wage has been a lifeline with the rising cost of living. The governor’s dedication to workers is clear, and he has truly earned our respect.”
Similarly, Mrs. Patricia Awodeha, a secondary school teacher, highlighted the positive impact on education: “For the first time, I feel assured that we are not forgotten. I can now focus on my students without constant financial worries. Governor Oborevwori’s action shows true understanding of our needs.”
