Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru, has issued a stern directive to the Chairmen of the state’s 13 Local Government Areas, mandating them to clear all outstanding salaries and pensions of workers by 2 PM on Monday, December 23, 2024.

The directive was announced during the Elders and Widows Party organized by the state government at the Christian Ecumenical Centre in Abakaliki. In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, Governor Nwifuru expressed dissatisfaction over delayed payments, describing the situation as unacceptable and a deviation from the principles of good governance.

“All local government staff must receive their October and November salaries, as well as pensions, by 2 PM tomorrow. If not, the chairmen responsible must resign,” Nwifuru warned.

The governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to the Chartered Needs Agenda, aimed at ensuring efficient governance and meeting the social contract with the people. He called for unity among government officials, urging them to align with his vision or step aside.

In addition to addressing salary and pension arrears, Governor Nwifuru demonstrated his commitment to the welfare of Ebonyi residents by approving a generous support package for 5,000 widows and elders who attended the party. Each beneficiary received ₦50,000, a 25kg bag of rice, and a wrapper.

The governor’s actions highlight his administration’s focus on alleviating the financial burdens faced by workers and vulnerable groups, especially during the festive season. His strong stance on accountability and welfare has been widely applauded by residents, who see this as a step toward restoring trust and efficiency in the governance of the state.
