Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has inaugurated an executive council committee comprising senior special assistants and special assistants to evaluate ongoing work on the mandatory 2-kilometre road projects across communities in the state.

The committee is to tour benefiting communities, assess the level and quality of work done, verify project costs, and submit a comprehensive report to the governor.

Senior Special Assistant on Infrastructural Maintenance, Ben Nwovu, disclosed this to journalists in Abakaliki on Tuesday.

Nwovu said Gov. Nwifuru expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work in some communities and warned that contractors found executing substandard jobs or abandoning sites would face sanctions.

He stressed that the governor remains committed to ensuring that all projects under his administration meet approved specifications and are delivered as promised.

“The governor is not leaving any stone unturned in ensuring that projects are properly executed. Any contractor found wanting will be penalised, while abandoned projects will be re-awarded to competent and reputable firms,” Nwovu said.

He noted that the 2-kilometre road initiative cuts across the 13 local government areas of the state and cumulatively amounts to nearly 300 kilometres of roads.

Describing the initiative as unprecedented, Nwovu said every autonomous community in the state is benefiting from the infrastructure policy of the Nwifuru administration.

He further highlighted ongoing infrastructural projects, including flyovers, tunnels, and the remodeling of the former international trade centre into the new Ebonyi Hotel at Presco Junction, where work, he said, is progressing steadily.

Nwovu also pointed to developments around Vanco, Nwofe, and Nwezenyi axes, as well as the ICT and Aeronautic Universities at Offerekpe Agbaja and Onueke Ezza, as evidence of what he termed “people-oriented and life-touching projects” across the state.

On road maintenance, he emphasized that sustaining infrastructure through continuous repairs remains a priority of the administration.

He listed completed roads such as Nwike, Oraifite, Ejiofor, and Afikpo Streets, while noting that Mile 50–Ishieke Road, Hilltop axis, Holy Ghost, and Elias Odili Streets have been measured for rehabilitation, with funding approvals expected soon.

He added that efforts are also ongoing on federal roads including the Abakaliki–Enugu Expressway, Abakaliki–Ogoja, and Abakaliki–Afikpo roads, in collaboration with the appropriate federal authorities.

Reiterating the governor’s stance against abandoned projects, Nwovu said the newly constituted state executive committee would identify contractors who have abandoned their 2-kilometre road projects or failed to meet specifications.
