Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and elder statesman, Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Useni (rtd.), is dead.
Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, made the announcement in a statement released in Jos, stating that the ex-minister passed away on January 23, 2025, at the age of 82, following a protracted illness.
The governor described the late Useni’s death as a profound loss to his family, the military, Plateau State, and the nation as a whole.
He praised the late general’s exemplary leadership and unwavering commitment to service, which left a lasting impact on Nigeria’s security and political development.
“General Useni was a patriot and a man of immense dedication, whose tireless efforts to promote peace and security, particularly in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State, will never be forgotten,” the governor stated.
The governor recounted the general’s illustrious career, which included serving as minister of transport, quartermaster general of the army, and minister of the FCT.
After retiring from the military, Lt. Gen. Useni (rtd) transitioned into politics. He held the position of deputy chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and was elected senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District in 2015, under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Gov. Mutfwang commended the late general’s life of selflessness and dedication to his community, highlighting his legacy of compassion, kindness, and generosity.
“His contributions to the military, politics, and his community will forever be remembered. His legacy will endure in the lives of those he impacted,” he said.
On behalf of the government and people of Plateau State, Governor Mutfwang extended his condolences to the president, the military, and the late Useni’s immediate family.
He prayed for strength and fortitude for the family and the nation to bear this great loss.
