The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed has raised concerns over the reported removal of railway sleepers along key rail corridors in parts of Bauchi State, describing the development as alarming and potentially damaging to the state’s economy.
The affected areas include Alkaleri and Tafawa Balewa Local Government Areas, where contractors were allegedly seen dismantling railway infrastructure.
The governor said he observed the activity while traveling to Alkaleri on a condolence visit.
Reacting to the situation, Gov. Mohammed directed his Chief of Staff, Aminu Gamawa, to formally contact the Federal Ministry of Transport, demanding urgent clarification.
He expressed concern that critical national assets might be removed without the knowledge or consent of the state government.

Although security personnel accompanying the contractors reportedly claimed the operation was authorized by federal authorities, the governor dismissed the explanation as insufficient.
In a statement through his New Media Aide, Lawal Muazu, the governor warned that the dismantling of railway facilities could signal neglect of key regions and undermine economic activities, particularly in agriculture, where rail transport plays a vital role in moving goods and people efficiently.
Gov. Mohammed also called for greater transparency and improved collaboration between federal and state governments, stressing that decisions involving critical infrastructure should be inclusive and considerate of their impact on local communities.
