Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has expressed deep grief over the death of the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Muhammad Zuru, describing the incident as a devastating blow to the state’s political leadership.

Zuru, who represented Zuru Constituency and held the traditional title Lifiddan Zuru, died on Monday, April 6, 2026, at a hospital in Cairo, Egypt, where he had been undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness.

His death was confirmed by the Clerk of the Assembly, Suleiman Shamaki.

In a condolence message issued on Tuesday, Gov. Idris said he received the news with “profound shock,” noting that the late Speaker’s death has created a significant vacuum in the state’s governance structure.

“I have received with a heavy heart the painful news of the passing of Muhammad Usman Zuru. This is a tragic and monumental loss, not just for Kebbi State but for the nation,” Gov. Idris said.

The governor described Zuru as a committed lawmaker and a stabilising force in the legislature, whose leadership helped maintain relative peace within the assembly amid Nigeria’s often turbulent state politics.

“He was an outstanding leader and a true patriot. His calm disposition, maturity in handling state affairs, and unwavering commitment to unity and progress distinguished him,” he added.

The governor further lamented the timing of the speaker’s death, noting that his experience and counsel were still critically needed.

“Kebbi has lost one of its finest sons at a time when his statesmanship and guidance were most needed,” he said.
