Rivers State Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara has unveiled an ambitious blueprint aimed at transforming Opobo Town into a hub for sustainable development, economic growth, and higher education. Speaking during the inauguration of the newly completed 7km Opobo Ring Road with three crossing bridges in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, Governor Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to unlocking the community’s full potential.

The Governor pledged to establish a higher institution of learning in Opobo Town to drive academic excellence and foster long-term economic development. Recognizing the community’s need for more infrastructure, he also promised extensive land reclamation projects to create space for critical facilities and employment-generating initiatives.

“Our major problem here is land, and we will do more reclamation,” Governor Fubara stated. “We intend to build a higher institution here and empower our people to reduce dependency. By creating a business-friendly environment, we will open doors for gainful employment and lasting growth.”

The newly inaugurated Opobo Ring Road, which was originally flagged off on May 28, 2023, under the previous administration, has been redesigned and completed to meet modern standards under Governor Fubara’s leadership. The road is expected to improve connectivity and accessibility within Opobo and surrounding communities, creating avenues for increased trade, tourism, and economic opportunities.

Describing the project as deeply personal, the Governor expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of the Opobo people. He said, “This project speaks for me and my administration. It is a testament to our dedication to delivering meaningful infrastructure that will positively impact lives.”

Governor Fubara also appealed to the people of Opobo Kingdom to maintain their long-standing reputation for peace, noting that tranquillity plays a vital role in attracting development. “Opobo/Nkoro remains one of the most peaceful local government areas. It is this harmony and shared understanding that will help us grow as a people,” he added.

The special guest of honour, Zamfara State Governor, Dr Dauda Lawal, commended Governor Fubara as a visionary leader whose infrastructural strides reflect a deep commitment to the welfare of Rivers State. According to Governor Lawal, the Opobo Ring Road and Bridges will significantly enhance connectivity, stimulate economic activities, and improve access to essential services for residents.

“This project is a milestone that demonstrates what leadership with vision can achieve,” Dr. Lawal remarked. “The improved infrastructure will attract investments, boost tourism, and enhance the quality of life for the people of Opobo.”

Providing details about the project, Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Barrister Elloka Tasie-Amadi, highlighted the challenges of executing the project due to Opobo’s unique terrain. He explained that parts of the road required imported materials and substantial elevation to ensure durability.

“This 7km road includes three bridges, drains, and multiple layers of stabilization to meet international standards,” Tasie-Amadi noted.

Hon. Enyiada Cookey-Gam, Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, described the project as “historic,” emphasizing its transformative impact on the community’s landscape and economy. The Managing Director of Lubrik Construction Company, Hadi Chehade, whose firm executed the project, applauded Governor Fubara’s leadership and vision.

With the completion of this iconic infrastructure, Opobo Town is now poised for an era of economic resurgence and strategic development. Governor Fubara’s blueprint, driven by education, infrastructure, and empowerment, marks a new chapter for the people of Opobo Kingdom, setting a standard for sustainable progress in Rivers State.

Senator Ibrahim Lamido dumps APC, blames insecurity, economic hardship By Paul Joseph A serving senator representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, Senator Ibrahim Lamido, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress, citing worsening insecurity and economic hardship in his constituency. The lawmaker announced his decision on his official X platform, stating that his resignation takes immediate effect. He explained that the move followed what he described as the party’s inability to adequately protect lives and support livelihoods across Sokoto East. Lamido raised serious concerns over the surge in bandit attacks in the region, noting that several communities have been overrun, with villages destroyed, residents displaced, and local economies severely disrupted. He said repeated appeals for urgent government intervention had failed to produce meaningful results. The senator stressed that his decision was not driven by political ambition but by the need to stand with his constituents during a period of deep crisis. He added that consultations with community leaders and political associates shaped his final decision to exit the ruling party. While he did not immediately announce his next political destination, Lamido hinted that he would align with a platform that prioritises security, grassroots development, and the welfare of citizens. He also called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts against banditry, warning that continued inaction could worsen the humanitarian situation across northern Nigeria. The development adds to growing political shifts ahead of the 2027 general elections, as security concerns and economic pressures continue to influence alignments within Nigeria’s political landscape.
