Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has announced plans to establish the Sayawa Chiefdom, with its headquarters in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area. This move, long anticipated by the Sayawa people, aims to address historical demands and foster peace in a region often plagued by ethno-religious conflicts.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Bauchi, Governor Mohammed explained that the decision follows recommendations from a fact-finding committee established to examine the feasibility and framework for the chiefdom’s creation. The committee’s findings laid out specific qualifications and health standards for selecting the paramount ruler, known as the “Gungzar.”

The governor expressed his administration’s determination to ensure that the Sayawa Chiefdom operates within a fair and sustainable framework. He clarified the succession process, emphasizing that in the event of a vacancy caused by resignation, death, or removal, candidates would be nominated by the two traditional clans, San Gami and San Ghshi, who have historical ties to the Sayawa people.

Addressing concerns from non-Sayawa communities within the proposed chiefdom, Governor Mohammed revealed plans to hold a referendum. This process will allow affected communities to decide whether to remain within the jurisdiction of the new chiefdom or opt out. He urged local leaders to educate their people about the government’s intentions and the roadmap for implementing the chiefdom.

The decision to create the Sayawa Chiefdom comes against the backdrop of recurring clashes in Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro areas, conflicts the governor described as tragic and entirely avoidable. He emphasized that his administration is committed to fostering an environment of peace, transparency, and inclusivity.

Governor Mohammed reaffirmed that the establishment of the chiefdom is not only a response to the demands of the Sayawa people but also a crucial step toward addressing the broader ethno-religious challenges in the region. By creating a framework for fairness and representation, the government hopes to pave the way for lasting peace and unity in Bauchi State.

The announcement has sparked widespread discussions among community leaders and residents, with many expressing hope that the move will bring an end to decades of strife and usher in a new era of harmony.
