Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Yusuf, has intensified efforts to recover dividends from the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) owed to the state by the federal government for the past 25 years. The governor, in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Ismail Falgore, called for a legislative resolution to expedite the recovery of funds accrued since January 1999.

During Tuesday’s plenary session, the Speaker read the governor’s letter, which highlighted the necessity of the House’s backing to ensure a comprehensive review, reconciliation, and recovery of the outstanding dividends.

Governor Yusuf stressed that these funds, when secured, would significantly enhance Kano State’s financial capacity, allowing for the execution of critical development projects to benefit its residents.

Majority Leader of the House, Lawan Husseini, emphasized that the Assembly’s resolution was a vital step towards unlocking the funds. He explained that state assemblies across the nation must collaborate and engage consultancy services to mediate and follow up on the federal government for the remittance of the funds. Husseini pointed out that the funds, amounting to billions of naira, could transform lives if properly utilized.

Hon. Zubairu Masu of the Sumaila constituency seconded the motion, urging the Assembly to prioritize the recovery of the state’s entitlement. He described the pursuit as a rightful action that aligns with the state’s interests.

In addition to the dividend recovery initiative, Governor Yusuf submitted the name of Nura Ma’aji as a commissioner nominee, bringing the total number of nominees screened by the House to seven. The nominees include Shehu Wada Sagagi, a former Chief of Staff to the governor, Dr. Dahiru Mohd Hashim, Ibrahim Abdullahi Wayya, Dr. Isma’il DanMaraya, Gaddafi Shehu, and Abdulkadir AbdulSalam.

Speaking to journalists after their screening, the nominees expressed their commitment to leveraging their expertise to drive development in the state. They pledged to work collaboratively with the government to achieve its developmental goals and improve the quality of life for Kano residents.
