The Gongola Peoples Forum (GPF), a socio-cultural association representing all ethnic nationalities of Gongola origin in Adamawa State, has made a passionate plea to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to grant clemency to Sunday Jackson, a farmer sentenced to death under controversial circumstances.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Engr. Markus Gundiri, the association expressed deep concern over what it described as a failure of the Nigerian legal system to uphold Jackson’s right to self-defense. GPF remains hopeful that Governor Fintiri, known for his sense of justice and compassion, will intervene to save the condemned farmer.
“Governor Fintiri is a leader of wisdom and empathy, a devout Muslim who values life. His track record in peace-building and justice mirrors divine mercy, making him a beacon of hope for those seeking fairness,” the statement read.
According to GPF, the incident that led to Jackson’s conviction occurred on his farm. While tending to his crops, an unidentified Fulani herder allegedly drove his cattle into the farm, causing destruction. When Jackson confronted the herder, the latter reportedly attacked him with a knife, inflicting serious injuries. In an act of self-defense, Jackson overpowered his attacker, seized the weapon, and fatally stabbed him in the neck.

Following his arrest, Jackson was tried in a Yola court, where he was convicted and sentenced to death by hanging. The court ruled that since he had already overpowered his attacker, he should have fled instead of retaliating. The verdict was upheld by the Supreme Court, sealing his fate unless executive clemency is granted.
Chairman Gundiri lamented the inconsistencies in the justice system, emphasizing that human rights organizations have long criticized such rulings. He urged Governor Fintiri to exercise his power of mercy and prevent what many perceive as a grave miscarriage of justice.
“Our legal team has examined this case thoroughly and found it to be a reflection of systemic failure. Governor Fintiri stands as the last hope to correct this injustice. His unwavering commitment to humanity and fairness must now be called upon to grant a state pardon and let the man live,” Gundiri declared.
The plea from GPF has sparked widespread debate, with many calling on Governor Fintiri to act swiftly and prevent an irreversible tragedy. As pressure mounts, all eyes are on the governor to determine whether justice will be tempered with mercy.
