Gombe State has taken a significant step towards energy sector reform, with the commencement of a public hearing on the Gombe State Electricity Bill, 2024.
The hearing, organized by the state House of Assembly Committee on Energy and Mineral Resources, was held today at the fonference hall of the Gombe State House of Assembly Complex.
The state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Zubairu Umar, representing the state government, provided a general overview of the bill.
The proposed legislation, provides for the establishment of the Gombe State Electricity Regulatory Commission, and the creation of the Gombe State Electricity Market.
Others are the formation of the Gombe State Electricity Council, and the establishment of the Gombe State Electricity Power Company (GOSEPCO).

The bill, at the time of filing this report, has passed its first and second readings and was subsequently, referred to an ad-hoc committee on energy.
It is now undergoing a public hearing to gather inputs from stakeholders before its final passage.
The session saw the participation of key stakeholders, including representatives from relevant ministries, electricity agencies as well as local government chairmen, non-governmental organizations, and other industry experts.
The legislative effort, our correspondent learnt is aimed at enhancing electricity supply and regulation in Gombe State, fostering economic growth and improved service delivery.
