Former Governor of Kano State and immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has inaugurated a 44-member committee to investigate the dismissal of over 10,000 Hisbah (Sharia Police) personnel by the current Kano State government.
The committee, chaired by Baffa Babba Danagundi, Director-General of the National Productivity Centre, is tasked with identifying and verifying the affected officers, while also exploring avenues for their rehabilitation and possible reinstatement. According to Danagundi, the panel was established under the directive of Ganduje, who expressed concern over the mass sackings that have sparked debate across the state.
“The dismissal of thousands of Hisbah officers has raised deep concerns among stakeholders and religious leaders. The institution has been central to promoting moral conduct and upholding Islamic values in Kano, and any decision affecting its workforce must be carefully reviewed,” Danagundi stated.

The Hisbah corps, widely recognized for enforcing Sharia-compliant practices in Kano, plays a key role in the state’s religious and social order. Its sudden downsizing has generated controversy, with critics questioning the motives behind the decision and supporters of Ganduje calling for fairness and transparency in addressing the matter.
The committee is expected to conclude its assignment within a stipulated timeframe and present recommendations that could shape future policy direction on the fate of the dismissed officers. Its report may determine whether the affected personnel will be reinstated, absorbed into alternative roles, or compensated.
For now, all eyes remain on the outcome of the review, which could have far-reaching implications for governance, religion, and politics in Kano State.
