Galatasaray fans have been banned from attending their club’s upcoming Champions League trip to Liverpool following crowd disturbances in the previous round.

European governing body UEFA confirmed the sanction after supporters of the Turkish side were found to have thrown objects and set off fireworks during the second leg of their last-16 play-off tie against Juventus in Turin on 25 February.

Despite losing 3-2 on the night, Galatasaray progressed 7-5 on aggregate, with a late extra-time goal from Baris Yilmaz proving decisive.

The Super Lig leaders are due to host Liverpool in Istanbul next Tuesday (17:45 GMT), before travelling to Anfield for the return leg on 18 March (20:00 GMT).

However, UEFA has prohibited Galatasaray from selling tickets to their supporters for the away fixture on Merseyside. The club has also been fined 40,000 euros (£34,800).

In a statement, Galatasaray said they intend to appeal against the punishment.
