Kano State was thrown into mourning as dignitaries and thousands of sympathizers gathered to bid a final farewell to the late Galadiman Kano, Alhaji Abba Sunusi Abbas. The funeral prayer, held at the historic Kano Emir’s Palace, was attended by Governor Abba Yusuf, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the revered Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II.
A statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, confirmed that Governor Yusuf was accompanied by his deputy, Comrade Aminu Gwarzo, and other high-ranking government officials. The funeral, presided over by the Chief Imam of Kano, Sheikh Prof. Sani Zahraddeen, witnessed an overwhelming turnout of mourners from across the country.
Following the solemn rites, the remains of the late Galadiman Kano were laid to rest at the Gandun Albasa Graveyard. The revered traditional titleholder, father of Kano APC Chairman Abdullahi Abbas, passed away at the age of 91 after a prolonged illness. He is survived by 35 children, multiple wives, and a large extended family.
Governor Yusuf described his passing as an irreplaceable loss, not only to Kano State but also to Nigeria’s traditional institutions. He acknowledged the Galadiman’s extensive contributions to the administration of the emirate and expressed concern over the vacuum his departure leaves behind. Offering heartfelt prayers, he asked God Almighty to forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest in paradise.

At the residence of the late Galadiman Kano, Deputy Governor Gwarzo conveyed the government’s deep condolences, urging the bereaved family to find solace in the late leader’s legacy. In response, Abdullahi Abbas, the eldest son of the deceased, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the governor and the people of Kano.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Hon. Ismail Falgore, also mourned the loss of the highly respected elder statesman, highlighting his immense impact on Kano’s socio-political and traditional landscape.
“As we bid him farewell, we pray for his family, the government, and the entire people of Kano State. May Allah comfort them, strengthen their hearts, and grant the late Galadiman eternal rest,” the Speaker stated.
The late Alhaji Abba Sunusi Abbas leaves behind a lasting legacy of service and leadership, with tributes pouring in from all corners of the nation. His passing marks the end of an era in Kano’s revered traditional institution, leaving many to wonder who will step into the shoes of the illustrious titleholder.
