Gabriel netted a dramatic winner in the 96th minute, helping Arsenal come from behind to defeat Newcastle United in the Premier League at St James’ Park.
The defender connected with Martin Odegaard’s corner, sending manager Mikel Arteta and his coaching staff into a frenzy on the sidelines.
Mikel Merino’s late header that glanced off the post equalized Nick Woltemade’s initial goal for Newcastle in a fiercely contested match.
With this victory, Arsenal closed the gap on league leaders Liverpool to just two points, leaving Newcastle reeling.
Newcastle seemed set for a win after Woltemade easily outjumped Gabriel to score with a powerful header from Sandro Tonali’s cross.

Gabriel dramatically fell in his own penalty area after feeling contact, prompting Arsenal players to crowd around referee Jarred Gillett, but the goal was upheld.
The frustrated visitors were also displeased after a penalty decision was overturned by the video assistant referee (VAR) during a goalless first half, when striker Viktor Gyokeres appeared to be fouled by Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope.
Gillett initially awarded a penalty but reversed his decision after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, stating that Pope “played the ball and there was no foul.”
Despite going behind, Arsenal demonstrated their resilience and turned the match around.
Having lost their last three matches at the lively St James’ Park, Arsenal seemed destined for another defeat.
Newcastle’s Pope was in outstanding form, making crucial saves against Eberechi Eze’s volleys, denying a header from Jurrien Timber, and deflecting a cross-shot from Bukayo Saka.
