The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called on Nigerians to adopt bicycles as a viable and affordable mode of transportation, highlighting the numerous benefits of cycling during a roadshow held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. This event, part of the 2024 World Cycling Day celebrations, aimed to raise awareness about the importance of cycling in reducing traffic congestion and promoting safer roads.
The roadshow, led by FRSC Sector Commander Christopher Kuje, included a sensitization program for students at Silver-Vallee Primary and Secondary School and a public rally through major streets in Port Harcourt. Commander Kuje emphasized that the United Nations (UN) has designated World Cycling Day to recognize the crucial role bicycles play in sustainable transportation, benefiting both the rich and the poor.
Speaking after the event, Kuje explained that bicycles offer a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and traffic-reducing solution to Nigeria’s growing transportation challenges. “Cycling is not only affordable but also helps to prevent road accidents and clears traffic obstructions,” he said. He further praised the Rivers State Cycling Association for their support, expressing optimism about the potential impact of promoting cycling across the country.

Highlighting global trends, Kuje pointed out that many European countries are already promoting the use of bicycles, and Nigeria could benefit from a similar shift. He noted that regular cycling could help reduce road traffic accidents by up to 80%, significantly improving road safety nationwide.
As World Cycling Day continues to gain traction, the FRSC’s call for Nigerians to embrace cycling could mark the beginning of a greener, safer, and more efficient transport system. The agency urges citizens to explore the benefits of cycling for their health, the environment, and road safety.
