As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate the 2025 Global Road Safety Week, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has called for collective action to curb road crashes in Nigeria.

He made the call in a statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, in commemoration of the global event, aimed at creating awareness about road safety.

This year’s theme is “safe walking and cycling: Calling for evidence-based measures to make walking and cycling safe.”

The corps marshal announced that activities for the week-long event will take place from May 12 – May 18, 2025.

He stressed that various programmes have been arranged to educate the public about the significance of the week and the necessity for collaboration to achieve its goals in Nigeria.

Mohammed noted that road traffic accidents are the leading cause of death among young people aged 5-29 years, with more than one out of every four deaths involving pedestrians and cyclists.

The corps marshal pointed out that this week presents an opportunity to inspire action at both national and local levels to make walking and cycling safer.

As the leading agency for road traffic management and safety administration in Nigeria, the FRSC has remained active in local and international efforts aimed at raising public awareness about road safety issues, particularly in promoting walking and cycling, in collaboration with the Cycling Association of Nigeria.

“As a result, the FRSC has intensified constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders in both government and non-governmental organisations involved in road construction, emphasising the need for adequate provisions for walkways and cycling paths in road designs to promote non-motorised means of transportation,” Corps Marshal Shehu further stated.

The corps marshal reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to all global campaigns for a safer road environment, contributing to the success of many Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country.
