Tragedy struck in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State, as a newly enlisted soldier, identified as Trooper Dauda Dedan, allegedly stabbed a police constable, Aaron John, to death during a late-night altercation that has left the community in shock.

The fatal incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Monday in the Mayo-Goyi area of Jalingo, where Constable John was reportedly responding to a distress call over a disturbance involving the soldier. Eyewitnesses said the confrontation escalated quickly, ending in a brutal attack that claimed the life of the police officer on duty.

Dedan, who only recently completed his training at the Depot Nigerian Army in Zaria, is said to have fled the scene immediately after the stabbing, prompting a joint manhunt by both the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army.

Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Taraba State Command, James Lashen, stated that the Force had officially notified the 6 Brigade Headquarters of the Nigerian Army. He added that both security agencies are working closely to track and apprehend the fleeing soldier.

Lashen stressed that the gravity of the incident will not be swept under the rug, assuring the public that the perpetrator will face justice. According to him, the military has pledged full cooperation in ensuring the suspect is brought to book, and inter-agency collaboration remains intact.

“The Nigerian Army has assured us of their commitment to assist in the arrest and prosecution of the fleeing suspect,” he said. “Despite this unfortunate development, the bond between the Nigeria Police and the Nigerian Army remains solid and unshaken.”

The killing has sparked outrage and concern among residents and rights groups, who are calling for a transparent investigation into the matter. Many fear the incident could set a dangerous precedent if not handled with the seriousness it demands.

As the search for Trooper Dedan intensifies, authorities are urging the public to remain calm while investigations continue. The tragic loss of Constable Aaron John has cast a dark cloud over the security apparatus in Taraba, raising urgent questions about discipline, mental health, and oversight within Nigeria’s armed forces.
